Nauryz holiday celebration held in New York

The Nauryz holiday has been celebrated not only in Kazakhstan but also in foreign countries. Kazakh folk songs and melodies, which are new to New York City residents, were played this day at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. A concert dedicated to the holiday of spring was held in one of its halls. It was organized by the Consulate General of Kazakhstan in New York and the Kazakh-American Alliance.

Raushan Yesbulatova, Consul General of Kazakhstan in New York:
- Ladies and Gentlemen, we welcome you today to the concert of traditional and classical music of Kazakhstan. This concert is a wonderful opportunity to foster greater understanding between Kazakhstan and America.

Karla Sarsekeyeva, representative, Kazakh-American Alliance:
- On behalf of the Kazakh-American Alliance, it’s my pleasure to welcome all of you at the celebration of the traditional holiday of Nauryz, a celebration of New Year and new beginnings. What a great opportunity this is to celebrate it together.

Representatives of the Kazakh diaspora, the New York City Hall, and the US Department of State were among those invited to the event. There were some celebrities among the guests as well. Actor Armand Assante was quite fascinated about the history and culture of Kazakhstan. He sincerely congratulated everyone with the oncoming of spring. The performance by the “Kerulen” folklore and ethnographic ensemble as well as opera singers, Talgat Musabayev and Bibigul Zhanuzak, won a storm of applause. Enchanting sounds of the zhetygen instrument and Yedil Khusainov’s guttural singing captivated the audience as well.

Jono Mainelli, musician:
- It was astonishing. It’s a wonderful energy and the percussion was very exciting. It’s an instrument that spans many cultures. I think it’s fascinating and his vocalization; it’s the lower larynx, the vibrato on that was astonishing. It’s like the Tibetan monks who have that intonation.

The audience was very amused with the concert which made them look forward to new performances. Kazakh diplomats promised that American people will have an opportunity to immerse into the rich world of Kazakh people’s culture many times in the future.
